Tub Surround Tile

Handis tiles the three-wall vertical surround above an alcove tub on a real waterproofing system — Schluter KERDI sheet membrane on cement backer board or full KERDI-Board panels — from $3,500 for a basic subway-tile surround up to $8,000 for a full surround with a recessed niche and a custom accent strip in coordinated natural stone. The acrylic surround whose top edge has yellowed and started flexing when you press it. The 1990s-era tile surround whose grout has gone black at the bottom course and whose bullnose at the apron is no longer flush. The fiberglass alcove kit that is structurally fine but reads as a starter-home aesthetic in a master bath that has been updated everywhere else. New tile on the tub surround is the bathroom upgrade that lands on the eye first and lasts the longest if it is built on a real membrane behind. Active in-wall plumbing leaks discovered during demo route to a licensed Washington L&I plumber FIRST; Handis returns to rebuild substrate, membrane, and tile after the licensed trade closes their portion.

What Does a Tub Surround Tile Install Include?

A tub-surround tile install is the three-wall vertical tile scope above an alcove tub — covering demo of the existing surround where in scope (acrylic, fiberglass, or aged tile), substrate set (cement backer board fastened to the studs at six inches on center, joints taped with alkali-resistant mesh and thinset, OR full Schluter KERDI-Board panels set with KERDI-Fix sealant and panel washers), waterproofing membrane (Schluter KERDI sheet bonded to cement board with unmodified thinset, OR the membrane built into the KERDI-Board panel itself), KERDI-Band seam tape at every inside corner and substrate joint, tile install in the homeowner-selected pattern, bullnose trim where the surround edge meets the surrounding drywall, grout sized to the joint width (sanded or unsanded), and finished perimeter caulk in 100 percent mildew-resistant silicone at every change-of-plane. From $3,500 for a basic subway-tile surround on KERDI sheet up to $8,000 for a full surround with niche and custom accent in coordinated natural stone.

Demo — Acrylic, Fiberglass, or Aged Tile

The existing surround comes off first. Acrylic and fiberglass surrounds remove in 30 to 60 minutes with a reciprocating saw and a pry bar — usually intact in two or three large pieces, removed from the site at C&D disposal. Aged tile surrounds (1990s-era ceramic on greenboard or cement board) require tile-by-tile removal with a chipping hammer or a tile-removal tool, plus substrate removal where the substrate is wet, soft, or moldy. We tarp the tub and the bathroom floor for the demo, run plastic-zip floor-to-ceiling at the doorway, and HEPA-vacuum at the end of each demo day. Demo of an existing acrylic surround is a $600 add-on; demo of an aged tile surround with substrate removal is priced into the total based on the substrate condition.

Substrate — Cement Backer Board or KERDI-Board

Two substrate paths. The cement-backer-board path fastens Hardibacker, Durock, or USG Tile Backer to the studs at six inches on center, tapes the joints with alkali-resistant mesh and thinset, and accepts the Schluter KERDI sheet membrane bonded on top with unmodified thinset — the most common pick on retrofit installs because it accepts standard substrate fasteners and matches the existing wall thickness. The KERDI-Board path sets KERDI-Board panels directly to the studs with KERDI-Fix sealant and panel washers — substrate and membrane in one product, the fastest path on a clean demo because the membrane install step is skipped. We recommend based on the existing wall depth, the demo state, and the homeowner's budget.

Membrane — Schluter KERDI Sheet or Built into KERDI-Board

Real waterproofing behind the tile, full stop. KERDI sheet membrane is the orange polyethylene fleece-laminated sheet that bonds to cement board with unmodified thinset, rolled flat with a deck roller, seamed with KERDI-Band at every inside corner. KERDI-Board has the waterproof layer built into the foam panel — installed directly to the studs, seamed with KERDI-Band at panel joints. Either path produces a continuous bonded membrane behind every tile on the surround. We do not tile over bare cement board treated as waterproofing. We do not skip the membrane on a tub surround.

Tile Pattern — Subway, Porcelain, Stone, Layouts

The visible-finish layer. Standard subway tile (3-by-6, 4-by-8, or 4-by-12 in white, cream, or a soft color) in a straight stack or running bond — the bathroom basics that fit any aesthetic and run at the lower price tier. Mid-range porcelain (6-by-24, 12-by-24, or 12-by-36 in matte or honed finish) in a vertical stack, horizontal stack, or herringbone — the most common pick on a modern remodel. Large-format porcelain (24-by-48 or 36-by-72) for a minimal-grout look — fewer pieces, more cuts, requires a leveling system. Natural stone (Carrara marble, Calacatta, travertine, slate) sealed and bedded carefully — premium aesthetics, more setup time and ongoing care. We will source and stage the tile on request (a $300 add-on) or install homeowner-supplied product.

Bullnose Trim Where the Surround Meets Drywall

The top edge and the side edges of the surround terminate against drywall — usually 6 inches above the showerhead and the standard surround height (60 inches or so above the tub deck) on the side walls. Bullnose trim (matching the field tile or a coordinating Schluter profile in metal or color-matched composite) covers the exposed cut edge for a finished look. Schluter JOLLY profile in matte black, brushed aluminum, or polished chrome is the most common pick on modern installs; field-tile bullnose is the traditional pick on subway and natural stone. We sample profile and finish on the booking call before the tile order is placed.

Grout, Caulk, and Sign-Off

Grout sized to the joint width — unsanded grout for joints under one-eighth inch (most modern porcelain), sanded grout for joints one-eighth inch and larger (subway tile, traditional layouts). Grout applied, cleaned, and sealed (penetrating sealer on natural stone, polymer sealer on porcelain joints). Perimeter caulk in 100 percent mildew-resistant silicone at every change-of-plane — tile-to-tub deck, inside corner of the surround, top edge against drywall, side edges against drywall, and any tile-to-window-apron seam. Silicone moves with the wall; grout in a movement joint cracks within a year. Walk-through and sign-off before final invoice.

Process

How a Tub Surround Tile Install Works

Seven sequential steps across a 4-to-6 working-day project — demo, substrate, membrane, layout, tile, grout, finish caulk. The actual sequence we follow on every tub-surround install.

Pricing

Tub Surround Tile Pricing

Final pricing depends on the tile selection, the substrate path (cement-board-plus-KERDI-sheet retrofit vs full KERDI-Board), whether a niche or accent strip is in scope, and the existing surround condition. Tile material cost is separate from the install labor priced here on most projects (homeowner-supplied or Handis-sourced as a separate line). Demo of an existing acrylic or fiberglass surround is a separate add-on. Active in-wall plumbing leak routes to a licensed Washington L&I plumber; their portion passes through transparently with the line item named. Request a free estimate for an accurate quote.

Send us a photo of the existing surround and tell us the tile look you have in mind — we will quote the substrate path and the install before booking.

Why Seattle Homeowners Book Handis for Tub Surround Tile

A tub surround is the bathroom finish that has the most surface area on the eye and the most failure modes hidden behind the tile. Every fifteen-year tub-surround failure we are called to rebuild traces to one of three causes — cement board treated as waterproofing (water passes straight through), un-taped inside corners (the failure point that no homeowner ever sees coming), or a tub-to-tile seam grouted instead of caulked (the joint that has to move and never can in grout). Handis builds to spec on all three — KERDI sheet or KERDI-Board membrane behind every tile, KERDI-Band on every inside corner, and 100 percent silicone at every change-of-plane. The finish reads as designed; the substrate is the part that lasts.

KERDI sheet or KERDI-Board behind every tile

Real bonded waterproofing membrane behind every tile on the surround. KERDI sheet on cement board for the retrofit path, KERDI-Board for the clean-demo path. We do not tile over bare cement board treated as waterproofing and we will not bid a surround that asks us to.

KERDI-Band on every inside corner

Every inside corner of the three-wall surround, every substrate joint, every change-of-plane where the surround meets drywall gets KERDI-Band bedded in thinset and rolled flat. The un-taped inside corner is the second most common failure path on a fifteen-year surround. We do not skip seam tape.

Tub-to-tile seam in silicone, not grout

The horizontal seam where the bottom course of tile meets the tub deck has to move — the tub flexes a fraction of an inch under a full bath, the tile does not. Grout in that seam cracks within a year. The seam goes in 100 percent mildew-resistant silicone, every install, no exceptions. The look reads as clean as a grout line and the seam stays sealed.

Tile pattern matched to the leveling system

Large-format porcelain (24-by-48 and bigger) needs a leveling-clip system on every tile to control lippage at the joint — the difference between a flat large-format wall and a wall with visible offsets at every joint. Subway and mid-range porcelain set with conventional spacers. We size the system to the tile and the layout, no shortcut.

Schluter JOLLY profile or field bullnose on the trim edge

The top edge and side edges of the surround terminate against drywall — finished with Schluter JOLLY profile in matte black, brushed aluminum, or polished chrome on modern layouts, or with field-tile bullnose on traditional and natural-stone layouts. We sample the profile and finish on the booking call so the trim choice is decided before the tile order goes in.

One-year project warranty on the install

Handis carries general liability and workers' compensation; every technician has cleared a background screening before the first job. The one-year project warranty covers the substrate, the membrane, the seam tape, the tile install, the grout, and the perimeter caulk — if a tile cracks, a grout joint pops, a seam opens, or a silicone bead fails inside a year because of our workmanship or prep, we come back and rebuild the affected section at no charge.

Estimate

Tell us the bathroom (master, guest, hall), the tub (alcove, drop-in alcove, freestanding inside an alcove), the existing surround state (acrylic, fiberglass, aged tile, or bare framing on a recent tub set), the tile look you have in mind (subway, mid-range porcelain, large-format, natural stone, or you-pick-with-us), whether you want a niche in scope, and the trim profile preference (Schluter JOLLY in a metal finish, field bullnose, or color-matched composite). Send phone photos if you can. We quote demo, substrate, membrane, tile install, sourcing, and any plumber-sub portion before booking.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Handis tub surround tile installs — substrate, tile selection, demo, scope, and timing.

How much does a tub surround tile install cost?
A basic three-wall alcove surround in standard subway tile on KERDI sheet starts at $3,500 for the install labor. A standard surround with field bullnose in mid-range porcelain runs $4,500. A surround with a recessed niche in a standard stud bay runs $5,500. A large-format porcelain surround (24-by-48 or bigger) on KERDI-Board with a leveling system runs $6,500. A marble or natural-stone surround runs $7,500. A full surround with niche and custom accent strip in coordinated natural stone runs $8,000. Tile material cost is separate from the install labor on most projects (homeowner-supplied or Handis-sourced as a $300 add-on). Demo of an existing acrylic or fiberglass surround is a $600 add-on. You get a written estimate with substrate path, tile spec, niche scope, and any plumber-sub portion named line by line before any work begins.
What is the difference between KERDI sheet on cement board and full KERDI-Board?
Two substrate-and-membrane paths that both produce a real waterproof tile surround. KERDI sheet on cement board fastens Hardibacker, Durock, or USG Tile Backer to the studs at six inches on center, tapes the joints with alkali-resistant mesh and thinset, and bonds the orange KERDI sheet membrane on top with unmodified thinset — the most common retrofit path because it accepts standard substrate fasteners and matches the existing wall thickness. Full KERDI-Board sets the green KERDI-Board panels directly to the studs with KERDI-Fix sealant and panel washers — substrate and membrane in one product, the fastest path on a clean demo because the membrane install step is skipped. Both systems are field-proven; we recommend on the booking call based on the demo state and the wall depth.
Do I have to demo the existing surround — can you just tile over it?
We do not tile over existing acrylic, fiberglass, or aged tile. Tiling over an acrylic surround traps moisture between the layers and the new tile pops within a year. Tiling over old tile adds wall thickness past what the surrounding drywall and trim can hide and the seam at the tub deck cannot be properly waterproofed. Demo is part of every tub-surround tile install — that is the only way the substrate behind gets inspected for moisture, mold, or rot, and the only way a real waterproofing membrane gets installed behind the new tile. Demo of an acrylic or fiberglass surround is a $600 add-on; demo of an aged tile surround is priced into the total based on substrate condition.
How long does a tub surround tile install take?
A standard surround on KERDI sheet with subway or mid-range porcelain runs 4 to 5 working days from demo to grout sealed and final caulk. Large-format porcelain (24-by-48 or bigger) adds a day for the leveling-system set time. Natural stone (marble, travertine, slate) adds a day for the pre-grout and post-grout sealer cure. A surround with a niche adds a day for the niche framing and KERDI-Band tie-in. A coordinated full-surround-plus-niche-plus-accent build runs 5 to 7 working days. The grout cure (24 to 48 hours before water exposure) and the silicone cure (48 hours to full cure) are fixed; the install steps are what scale with scope.
Can you match a tile or pattern I have already picked?
Yes. Bring the tile model, color, finish, size, and edge profile (or send us links to the product pages) and we will source on order, stage on site, and install to your spec. We can also recommend product lines if you have not picked yet — Daltile, Bedrosians, Walker Zanger, Ann Sacks, Akdo, and the standard subway and porcelain catalogs at the local trade-only and contractor-friendly tile yards. Tile sourcing and staging is a $300 add-on if you want Handis to handle the procurement. Material is on the homeowner's invoice as a separate line or sourced through Handis with the pass-through cost named.
What if the demo opens up wet substrate or an active leak?
We stop and tell you before we do anything beyond what the original quote covers. Wet substrate, blackened cement board, soft drywall behind the tub apron, or visible mildew at the bottom plate crosses into substrate-rebuild and possibly carpentry scope and changes the quote. You see the photos, you see the revised number, you sign off, then we proceed. If the source is an active in-wall plumbing leak (a supply pinhole, a drain joint failure, a valve drip), we route to a licensed Washington L&I plumber for the leak fix as the responsible licensed party — their portion is a separate invoice. Handis returns to rebuild substrate, membrane, and tile after the leak fix is signed off.
Do I need a permit for a tub surround tile install?
Tub-surround tile install on an existing tub with no plumbing changes does not require a permit — it is finish-and-repair work. Permits are required when the work involves moving the tub drain, moving the valve, structural framing changes (wall relocation, window changes inside the wet zone), or any new in-wall plumbing or electrical. The licensed Washington L&I plumber pulls the permit for their portion when in-wall plumbing work is in scope. We will tell you on the booking call whether your scope crosses into permit territory.
What grout color should I pick?
Match the tile for the cleanest look (grout lines disappear, the tile reads as a continuous surface) or contrast for definition (grout lines pop, the tile pattern is highlighted). White and off-white grout in a wet area shows soap and mineral staining inside two to three years even with regular sealing — most modern installs pick a mid-tone gray or a color matched to the tile field instead. We bring sample boards on the booking visit and confirm the grout color from the actual sample against the actual tile in the actual bathroom lighting before we order. Sanded grout for joints one-eighth inch and larger; unsanded for joints under one-eighth inch.
Do you cover homes outside Seattle proper?
Yes — most of the Puget Sound region is in service area, from north Seattle and Shoreline through Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Issaquah, Sammamish, Renton, Tukwila, Burien, and south to Federal Way and Auburn. Tub-surround tile installs on the I-90 corridor (North Bend, Snoqualmie, Cle Elum) and Hood Canal property are covered with a travel premium added to the project price; we will name it on the quote before you sign. Outside that radius we will tell you on the call if the math works.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. Handis carries general liability and workers' compensation; every technician has cleared a background screening before the first job. The one-year project warranty covers the substrate, the membrane, the KERDI-Band seam tape, the tile install, the grout, and the perimeter silicone caulk — if a tile cracks, a grout joint pops, a seam opens, or a silicone bead fails inside a year because of our workmanship or prep, we come back and rebuild the affected section at no charge. The Schluter manufacturer warranty on the KERDI products runs longer (lifetime on KERDI sheet when installed by a trained installer) and we register every build for the manufacturer warranty so you have a paper trail. The licensed-sub portion (any plumbing work) carries its own Washington L&I-trade warranty, also named on the quote so you know whom to call for what.
