Aluminum Railing
Aluminum railing is the lowest-maintenance system of any railing material — powder-coated aluminum pickets and rails from major fabricators (AFCO Aluminum, Westbury, Trex Signature, Fortress Building Products, Key-Link Fencing) in a color-through powder coat that does not flake or peel like paint, lasts 20-plus years in PNW rain without refinishing, and asks nothing of the homeowner beyond an occasional rinse with a garden hose. The right pick for the homeowner who put up wood railing twelve years ago, refinished it four times, watched the bottom rail rot anyway, and is done with the maintenance cycle. Sleek modern profile (1-inch square pickets, 1.5 to 2-inch top rail), standard colors in black, bronze, and white with premium textured colors available at upcharge. Every install meets IRC R312 — 36-inch minimum guard height (42 inches in jurisdictions like Bellevue where the deck sits more than 30 inches above grade), the 200-pound concentrated load at the top rail, and the 4-inch sphere rule for the picket spacing (handled by manufacturer spec on every system — pickets come pre-spaced in the rail extrusion). Two working days for most installs. From $3,500 for a 25-linear-foot standard black powder-coated run to $9,000 for a longer premium-color textured system on a stair-included deck. Pure carpentry — no licensed sub required.

What Aluminum Railing Covers
Aluminum railing is the no-maintenance answer to the wood railing that needs annual sealer, the cable railing that needs annual re-tension, and the glass railing that needs monthly squeegee. Powder-coated aluminum from major fabricators in pre-engineered systems — pickets, top rail, bottom rail, posts, and end caps all match in finish out of the box. The 4-inch sphere rule is handled by the manufacturer's picket spacing in the rail extrusion (we do not have to lay out and space pickets in the field). Every install meets IRC R312. No licensed sub required.
Vendor Selection — AFCO, Westbury, Trex Signature, Fortress, Key-Link
Five reputable vendors with similar quality and similar warranties. AFCO Aluminum is the long-standing industry standard with the deepest dealer network. Westbury Railing has the cleanest profile catalog (matched picket and rail proportions). Trex Signature pairs naturally with Trex composite decking when the deck is a Trex install. Fortress Building Products has a strong mid-price offering with the best black powder-coat consistency we have seen. Key-Link Fencing covers the premium color range with textured powder-coat finishes (Bronze Textured, Antique Bronze, Hartford Green) at upcharge. We recommend the vendor that fits the deck and the look on the estimate visit.
Picket Profile — Square or Round
Standard pickets are 1-inch square aluminum extrusions — the modern clean look that pairs with composite decking and contemporary architecture. Round pickets (3/4-inch round) are available from most vendors for a more traditional look or to match an existing porch profile. Spacing is fixed by the manufacturer in the rail extrusion (typically 4 inches on-center) so the 4-inch sphere rule passes automatically. We will not field-space pickets on aluminum systems — the pre-engineered spacing is the right call.
Color and Finish Options
Standard colors across most vendors are gloss black, gloss bronze, and gloss white — typically no upcharge from the base price. Premium colors (textured finishes, metallic finishes, custom colors) run $1,000 to $2,000 upcharge depending on the vendor and the run. The powder-coat is color-through — a scratch shows the same color underneath, unlike paint which shows bare aluminum. The finish holds in PNW rain for 20-plus years without refinishing; chalking or fading after year 15 to 20 is the typical end-of-life for the finish, at which point the homeowner can have it professionally powder-recoated or replaced.
Picket and Rail Connections
Pickets snap into pre-routed channels in the top and bottom rail extrusions and are secured with hidden internal fasteners — the picket-to-rail connection is concealed and rattle-free. Rails are fastened to the posts with vendor-supplied brackets (typically through-bolt or screw mount per vendor spec). Posts through-bolted to the deck framing with stainless 1/2-inch carriage bolts and washers into solid rim-joist blocking — same connection detail as our wood and cable systems. The 200-pound code load is carried by the post and bracket assembly to the deck framing.
How the Aluminum Railing Install Works
Six sequential phases from vendor selection to closeout — the actual working sequence we run on every aluminum railing install, with the pre-engineered manufacturer spacing handling the 4-inch sphere rule automatically.
Vendor + Color + Picket Profile Selection
Estimate visit walks through the five vendors (AFCO, Westbury, Trex Signature, Fortress, Key-Link), the standard color (gloss black, gloss bronze, gloss white) or premium upcharge color (textured bronze, metallic, custom), and the picket profile (1-inch square standard, 3/4-inch round for traditional look). Vendor lead time is 1 to 3 weeks; ordered at contract signing.
Demo + Rim Joist Blocking Check (Day 1)
Old railing demoed and hauled. Inside-the-rim blocking checked at every new post location — if blocking is absent (common on decks built before 2010), solid blocking added so the post through-bolt has wood to clamp into. Priced at $125 per post on the quote. The deck surface protected with rosin paper or floor protection mats throughout the install.
Post Setting + Through-Bolt (Day 1-2)
Posts plumbed and through-bolted with stainless 1/2-inch carriage bolts and washers — never lag-screwed into end-grain. Post heights cut to the AHJ requirement (36 inches typical, 42 inches in Bellevue and other amendment jurisdictions where the deck is more than 30 inches above grade). End posts get vendor-supplied caps in matching finish.
Rail and Bracket Install (Day 2)
Vendor-supplied brackets fastened to the posts per the manufacturer's drilling pattern. Top and bottom rail sections cut to length (the rails come in standard 6-foot or 8-foot lengths and field-cut at corners and returns), mitered at corners, snapped or screwed into the brackets. Joints between rail sections concealed with vendor-supplied connectors.
Picket Install + 4-Inch Sphere Verification (Day 2)
Pickets snap into the pre-routed channels in the top and bottom rails at the manufacturer's pre-engineered spacing (typically 4-inch on-center for the 4-inch sphere rule). Hidden internal fasteners secure the pickets in the channel. We walk the run with a 4-inch test sphere at completion — the pre-engineered spacing always passes, but we document the check.
Closeout + Maintenance Notes
Post caps installed, any exposed fasteners caulked or hidden with vendor-supplied trim, the deck cleaned and floor protection removed. Closeout walk-through with the homeowner covering the (minimal) maintenance schedule — annual garden-hose rinse to remove pollen and dust, semi-annual mild-detergent wash if needed, no painting or sealing for the life of the finish. Vendor warranty paperwork handed over.
Aluminum Railing Pricing
Final pricing depends on the vendor, the color (standard gloss black, bronze, white at base price; premium textured or metallic at upcharge), the linear footage, the picket profile (square is standard, round is upcharge from most vendors), any stair runs or returns, and whether the existing framing needs post blocking added (priced at $125 per post if not). Powder-coat finish — color-through, not paint over aluminum
Every aluminum railing we install is genuine powder-coated aluminum from a major fabricator (AFCO, Westbury, Trex Signature, Fortress, Key-Link). The powder-coat is color-through — a scratch shows the same color underneath, unlike spray paint which shows bare aluminum at the scratch and starts the rust-and-peel cycle. The finish is electrostatically applied and oven-cured at the manufacturer (we do not field-finish aluminum). Holds in Pacific Northwest rain for 20-plus years without refinishing; chalking or fading after year 15 to 20 is the typical end-of-life, at which point the homeowner can have it professionally powder-recoated or replaced.
Pre-engineered manufacturer picket spacing — sphere rule passes automatically
The 4-inch sphere rule is handled by the manufacturer's pre-engineered picket spacing in the rail extrusion (typically 4 inches on-center). We do not field-space pickets on aluminum systems — the spacing is set when the rail is fabricated. We walk the finished run with a 4-inch test sphere at completion as a documentation step, but the pre-engineered spacing always passes. The result is a code-compliant system that is faster to install than a field-spaced wood baluster system and more consistent in appearance.
Through-bolted posts with rim-joist blocking — same as wood and cable
Posts through-bolted to the deck framing with stainless 1/2-inch carriage bolts and washers into solid rim-joist blocking — same detail as our wood and cable installs. The 200-pound code load is carried by the post and bracket assembly to the deck framing. If the existing deck does not have rim-joist blocking, we add it as part of the install (priced at $125 per post on the quote). The connection is what carries the code load — the most invisible and the most load-bearing part of the install.
Honest about the look — modern, clean, not transparent or warm
Aluminum railing reads modern. It looks clean and finished but it is not transparent like cable or glass, and it is not warm like cedar or mahogany. We will tell you on the call which look fits the deck and the architecture. For a craftsman porch or a 1920s bungalow, aluminum is not the right pick — cedar reads period-correct. For a 2010 contemporary build with composite decking, aluminum reads exactly right. For a view deck where the sight-line is the whole reason for the deck, cable or glass beats aluminum on the transparency. We are honest about the look-fit at the estimate visit.
Insured, background-checked, 30-day workmanship + 2-year structural warranty + vendor warranty
Every Handis carpenter carries general liability and workers' compensation insurance and has cleared a background screening. The 30-day workmanship guarantee covers post alignment, rail alignment, and any cosmetic punch-list item. The 2-year structural warranty covers the post connections, the through-bolt schedule, and the picket retention — if a post loosens, a rail joint opens up, or a picket loosens inside 2 years from our install, we come back and fix at no charge. The vendor warranties on the powder-coat finish (typically 15 to 25 years against fade, chalk, and peel) and the structural components (10 to 20 years) pass through to the homeowner at install — we hand over the warranty paperwork at closeout.
Estimate
Tell us the deck size and the railing run in linear feet, the color you are leaning toward (standard black, bronze, white at base price; premium textured or custom at upcharge), the picket profile preference (square standard, round traditional), any stair runs, and the deck height above grade (drives the 36 vs 42-inch question). We send back a clear estimate with the vendor recommendation and a project timeline.
Customer Reviews
Aluminum railing install reviews from verified Seattle-area Handis customers across the five vendor systems.
Aluminum railing on a long back deck in Sammamish — about 65 linear feet with a stair run. We wanted zero maintenance going forward (the previous wood railing had been refinished four times in twelve years and was rotting at the bottom rail again). Powder-coated black, three working days. Two years in and it looks identical to install day. No staining, no sealing, no thinking about it. Wish we had done this twelve years ago.
Trex Signature aluminum railing to match our Trex Transcend decking on a 2018 Issaquah build. The black powder-coat on the railing matches the picture frame border on the deck exactly. Two and a half working days. Handis through-bolted every post with extra blocking — the deck builder had set the original wood railing on lag screws and the posts were getting loose. The new aluminum posts are rock solid.
Westbury bronze powder-coat aluminum on a covered front porch in Phinney Ridge. Picked the bronze color to complement the cedar porch ceiling — it reads as a deliberate design choice now rather than just generic black metal. Two working days. The picket profile is sharper than I expected from photos, in a good way. Three years in and the finish is unchanged.
Key-Link Hartford Green textured aluminum on a back deck in West Seattle. Wanted a color other than the standard black or bronze — the Hartford Green hides in the surrounding evergreen landscaping and the deck feels less framed by the railing now. Three working days for a 40-foot run with two corners. The premium color upcharge was worth it for the unique look.
Fortress aluminum railing for our rental property in Burien — we needed something that the tenants could not damage and that we would not have to refinish. Black powder-coat, 25 linear feet, two working days. Six tenants in three years and the railing looks new. Easy garden-hose rinse and done. Perfect rental-property choice.
