Blinds & Shades Installation

Handis blinds and shades installation mounts roller and Roman shades, faux-wood and aluminum blinds, vertical blinds, motorized smart shades, and plantation shutters per window — inside-mount or outside-mount, leveled, and smart-home-paired — from $200. Blinds and shades sit in boxes since week one because the install instructions skip the measurement-verification step, treat inside-mount and outside-mount as interchangeable (they are not), and never explain how to handle motorized shade pairing past the box's QR code. We measure twice on arrival, decide the mount mode by window depth, install per the actual product spec, and pair motorized units to your smart-home system before we leave.

Service

What Does Blinds & Shades Installation Include?

Blinds and shades installation is the per-window mounting service for roller and Roman shades, faux-wood and aluminum blinds, vertical blinds on sliders, motorized smart shades, plantation shutters, and cordless child-safe units — covering inside-mount or outside-mount selection, bracket leveling, smart-home pairing on motorized units, and specialty anchoring on plaster, masonry, or tile. Handis covers seven real install types from $200 per window, each with its own bracket positioning, mount mode, and gotchas.

Roller Shades & Roman Shades (Inside or Outside Mount)

Roller shades and Roman shades both mount with bracket pairs at the top of the window. The key decision: inside-mount (brackets inside the window frame, shade sits flush within the frame for a clean recessed look) or outside-mount (brackets outside the frame on the wall, shade covers the frame and provides better light blocking). Inside-mount needs a window depth of at least the bracket's published minimum (usually 1.5 to 3 inches). Outside-mount works on any window but extends past the frame width.

Faux-Wood & Aluminum Blinds

Standard horizontal blinds — slats that tilt, a cord or wand for tilt control, a lift cord or cordless mechanism to raise and lower. Faux-wood is heavier than aluminum and needs sturdier brackets, especially on wider windows. Inside-mount is the cleaner finish; outside-mount is the right answer when window depth is shallow. About 25 to 35 minutes per window.

Vertical Blinds & Sliding Door Tracks

Patio doors, sliding doors, and floor-to-ceiling windows get vertical blinds on a track-mounted system. The track has to be perfectly level — even a small tilt makes the slats hang at different angles and means they will not close properly. Track mounts to the ceiling or to a horizontal support above the door, with the carrier system feeding from one end. The chain mechanism opens and closes the slats and traverses them across the opening. About 60 to 80 minutes per slider.

Motorized Smart Shades

Battery-powered or hardwired motorized blinds — Hunter Douglas PowerView, Lutron Serena, IKEA FYRTUR, Costco branded smart shades. The install has two parts: the physical mount (same as a roller shade) and the smart-home pairing. We pair to Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, or the manufacturer's app, set the open/close schedule, test the voice control, and demo the operation. About 60 to 75 minutes per window including pairing.

Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters mount directly to the window frame (or to a custom-built frame attached to the window opening). They are significantly heavier than blinds and the hinge alignment has to be precise — a hinge that is off by 1/16 inch means a panel that does not close flat against the frame. We install the frame, hang each panel on its hinges, check every hinge for flush closure, and adjust the tilt rod so the louvers move together smoothly. About 75 minutes per window for standard plantation shutters; longer for wider openings or arched windows.

Cordless & Child-Safe Units

U.S. cord-safety standards (the Window Covering Safety Council standard, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018) require that newly manufactured stock window coverings sold to consumers be cordless or have inaccessible cords. If you have older corded blinds with accessible loops, we can retrofit cord-shorteners or cord-cleats to bring them into safe-use practice. Cordless replacement units are a different conversation — we install them, but the upgrade is a purchase decision you make first.

Plaster, Masonry & Tile Window Surrounds

Older homes with plaster window surrounds, brick or stone accent walls around windows, and tile bathroom window frames each need different hardware. Plaster takes longer-shank toggles into the cavity. Brick and stone take masonry sleeve anchors into the mortar. Tile takes diamond-tipped bits through the tile into the cement board behind. Add-on pricing covers the slower install pace.

Process

How Blinds & Shades Installation Works

Five steps every Handis blinds and shades install runs through — window depth measured for inside or outside mount, brackets leveled to a laser line, motorized smart shades paired to your smart-home of choice, plantation shutter hinges verified panel-by-panel, and operation tested before we leave.

Why Handis for Blinds & Shades

A few hundred blinds installs across motorized smart shades, plantation shutters, vertical blinds on sliders, and roller shades on every window type residential homes produce — and the recurring pattern is the same. The product itself is usually fine. The install instructions are usually written for someone who has done it before. The window measurements are usually off by enough to make inside-mount fail. The motorized pairing is usually unfinished — physical install done, app pairing never attempted because the QR code scanned wrong on the user's phone. We close the gap on all of it.

Inside-mount vs outside-mount decided on arrival

Window depth dictates inside-mount feasibility — the bracket has a published minimum window depth (usually 1.5 to 3 inches). We measure the actual usable depth of your window (which is sometimes less than the frame's outer depth because of cranks, latches, or sash protrusions) and pick the right mount mode. Inside-mount when feasible (cleanest visible result); outside-mount when window depth or hardware interference forces it.

Track and bracket level checked twice

Vertical blinds and any multi-bracket horizontal blind install need precise leveling — even a quarter-inch tilt across a 6-foot track means slats hang at different angles and do not close properly. We use a laser level for tracks and a 4-foot bubble level for individual brackets. Level checked before mounting and again after the blind is hung.

Smart-home pairing taken to completion

Motorized blinds get paired all the way through — voice control verified, schedule set, app demo'd. Costco-branded smart shades, IKEA FYRTUR, Hunter Douglas PowerView, Lutron Serena — we have paired all of them with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and SmartThings. The install is not done until the schedule fires correctly and the voice command works.

Plantation shutter hinges verified panel-by-panel

Plantation shutter installs fail at the hinge alignment — a hinge off by 1/16 inch means a panel that does not close flat against the frame. We check each hinge for flush closure as we hang each panel, adjust as needed before moving to the next, and check the tilt rod sync at the end to verify all louvers move together.

Cord-safe retrofit on existing corded blinds

Older homes with corded blinds and small children should be brought into cord-safe practice. We install cord-shorteners or cord-cleats per ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018 best-use practices. The retrofit is $80 per window and takes about 15 minutes per blind. Newer cordless replacement units are a purchase decision; we install whatever you choose.

30-day workmanship guarantee

If a bracket loosens, the blind binds, the motor pairing fails, or a plantation panel will not close due to our installation within 30 days, we come back and fix at no charge.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about blinds and shades installation.

How much does blinds and shades installation cost?
A roller or Roman shade per window starts at $200. Faux-wood or aluminum blinds per window are $200. Vertical blinds on a slider door are $300. Motorized smart shades (including smart-home pairing) are $350 per window. Plantation shutters are $450 per window. Specialty anchoring on plaster, masonry, or tile adds $50 per window. Multi-window visits get a $120 reduced per-window rate after the fourth window. Cord-safe retrofit on existing corded blinds is $80 per window. You get a clear estimate before any drilling.
What is the difference between inside-mount and outside-mount?
Inside-mount puts the brackets inside the window frame, with the blind sitting flush within the frame opening — cleanest visible finish, no frame overlap, looks recessed into the window. Outside-mount puts the brackets on the wall above and to the sides of the window, with the blind covering the frame and projecting out. Inside-mount needs sufficient window depth (usually 1.5 to 3 inches minimum, depending on the bracket). Outside-mount works on any window but extends past the frame width. We measure your window depth on arrival and recommend the right mount mode.
Can you install motorized smart shades and connect them to my smart home?
Yes — and this is one of our more common requests now. We install Hunter Douglas PowerView, Lutron Serena, IKEA FYRTUR, Costco-branded smart shades, and most other major motorized blinds. The install includes physical mounting plus pairing to your smart-home system (Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, or the manufacturer's own app), setting open/close schedules, testing the voice control, and demoing the operation. Pricing is $350 per window including the pairing work.
How long does it take to install plantation shutters?
A standard plantation shutter install on a single window takes about 75 minutes — frame install, panel hanging, hinge alignment check, tilt rod adjustment, and a final operation test. Wider openings (above 4 feet) or arched windows take longer because the panel-count is higher and the frame fitting takes more time. Multi-window plantation shutter visits run 4 to 6 hours for a typical 4-window project.
Can you install on plaster, brick, or tile around the windows?
Yes — and each material needs different hardware. Plaster gets longer-shank toggle bolts that bite past the lath into the cavity. Brick and stone get carbide-bit drilling into the mortar joints and sleeve anchors. Tile gets diamond-tipped bits through the tile, then a toggle into the cement board behind. Specialty anchoring is a $50 per window add-on covering the slower install pace and the specialty hardware.
What about cord safety for children?
U.S. cord-safety standards (ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018) require newly manufactured stock window coverings to be cordless or have inaccessible cords. If you have older corded blinds, we can retrofit cord-shorteners or cord-cleats per WCSC best-use guidance ($80 per window). The cord-cleat mounts high on the wall and shortens the loop accessible to children. If you want cordless replacement units, we install them — the upgrade is a purchase decision you make first. The CPSC publishes guidance on cord safety; this work is straightforward and we recommend it for homes with young children.
Can you install blinds I already purchased?
Yes — most of our installs are customer-supplied blinds. You do not need to buy through us. If you already have the blinds, shades, or shutters, we install them. We verify on arrival that the window measurements match the blind specs (occasionally inside-mount blinds turn out to be sized for the wrong opening — we tell you before mounting). If anything is off, we recommend the fix (re-order or outside-mount) before drilling.
Do you supply blinds or shades?
Generally no — blind selection is a personal choice and the options are best made from your specific window measurements and your room aesthetic. We can recommend reputable suppliers if you ask, but we focus on the install rather than the sale. The exception is small replacement parts (a single broken bracket, a missing wand) which we can often source on-site or pick up before the install.
Do you take down old blinds?
Yes — included in the install price when we are replacing existing blinds with new ones at the same window. We remove the old hardware, patch the previous bracket holes if they will not be reused, and install the new blinds. If you just want old blinds taken down without a replacement install, that is a $40-per-window service (mostly to patch the hardware holes and dispose of the old hardware).
Is there a guarantee on the work?
30-day workmanship guarantee. If a bracket loosens, the blind binds, the motor pairing fails, or a plantation panel will not close due to our installation within 30 days, we come back and fix at no charge. The guarantee covers our anchoring, our leveling, and our smart-home pairing. It does not cover the blind product itself (manufacturer warranty), motor failures unrelated to our pairing work, or damage from later changes to the smart-home network.
