Cabinet Door Replacement

Handis cabinet door replacement is the middle-ground kitchen-cabinetry trade — just the doors and drawer fronts, no veneer on the boxes, no full refacing — from $2,500 for a partial kitchen to $7,000 for a full kitchen of 30 to 50 doors and drawers. The work for a kitchen where the boxes are in good shape and the finish on the boxes is the look you want to keep — painted white shaker boxes where you want to change just the door style, stained oak boxes where you want different doors but want to keep the wood grain on the sides. We measure every opening to the sixteenth, order replacement doors and drawer fronts in your style and finish, swap to new European concealed soft-close hinges, hang the new doors with three-way adjustment for reveal alignment, attach the new drawer fronts. Faster and cheaper than full refacing because the box-side veneer work is skipped. The look-change is dramatic because the doors and drawer fronts are 95 percent of what you see in a kitchen.

What Does Cabinet Door Replacement Include?

Cabinet door replacement is the middle-ground kitchen-cabinetry trade — replacement doors and drawer fronts on existing cabinet boxes, no new veneer on the boxes, no full refacing — from $2,500 for a partial kitchen to $7,000 for a full kitchen of 30 to 50 doors and drawers. The work for a kitchen where the boxes are in good shape and the box finish is the look you want to keep. The work breaks into precise measurement, replacement-door order, removal of the old doors, install of new soft-close hinges, hang of the new doors, attachment of new drawer fronts, and walkthrough. Faster and cheaper than full refacing because the box-side veneer step is skipped; the look-change is still dramatic because the doors and drawer fronts are 95 percent of what you see in a kitchen.

When to Replace Doors Only (Not Reface)

Door-replacement-only is the right call in three scenarios. First — painted-white shaker boxes (1990s and 2000s standard) where the homeowner wants to change just the door profile to slab or to a more current shaker style. Second — stained-wood boxes (oak, maple, cherry) where the homeowner likes the wood grain on the visible sides and wants different doors. Third — any kitchen where the box-side finish is intact and matches what the homeowner wants to keep, but the doors are dated, damaged, or just out of style. If the box-side finish is dated and you want a full look-change, full refacing (with new veneer skins on the boxes) is the right call instead.

Measure Every Door and Drawer Opening — to the Sixteenth

Every door and drawer opening measured to the sixteenth of an inch — width, height, and the existing-door reveal. The reveal sets the overlay on the replacement door (the amount the door extends past the cabinet opening on each side). The measurements ship to the door supplier as a measured shop drawing — Cabinet Door Shop, Conestoga, TaylorCraft, or a local custom shop in the Seattle area depending on style and finish. Lead time on a full kitchen door order is typically 3 to 6 weeks from order to delivery.

Order Replacement Doors and Drawer Fronts in Your Style and Finish

Replacement doors come in any style your supplier offers — shaker (the current standard), slab (modern minimal), raised-panel (traditional), beadboard (cottage). Finish options — paint-grade poplar or MDF for any paint color, stain-grade oak or maple for any stain color, white or cherry thermofoil for a uniform colored finish, veneer over MDF for a hardwood look at a lower price. Drawer fronts ship in the same style and finish in the same order. We help you pick on the booking call.

Remove Old Doors and Drawer Fronts, Install New Soft-Close Hinges

Existing doors and drawer fronts removed and labeled for disposal or donation. Old hinges unscrewed from the cabinet box hinge cups. New European concealed soft-close hinges (Blum BLUMOTION, Salice SilentSystem, or Grass Tiomos) mounted to the new doors and to the existing box hinge cups. Drawer fronts attach to existing drawer boxes with the manufacturer's drawer-front clips (the clips that ship with the new drawer fronts). Old drawer-front screws may need to be removed and the holes filled if the new drawer-front position differs.

Hang New Doors with Three-Way Adjustment for Reveal Alignment

Every replacement door hung on the cabinet box, hinge engaged, three-way adjustment applied (height, depth, side-to-side) to align the reveal — the door reveal on the top and bottom of every door is the same across the entire kitchen. Reveals on adjacent doors line up at the gap. Drawer fronts adjusted to center on the drawer box and to line up with the doors above. Final adjustment after a few weeks of use because new hinges settle slightly under the weight of the door — we offer a free 30-day follow-up adjustment.

Cabinet Door Replacement Pricing

Cabinet Door Replacement Pricing

Final pricing depends on door count, style, finish, and whether new soft-close hinges or just door swap is in scope. Premium door styles (custom shaker in a paint-grade hardwood, raised-panel cherry, beadboard in a stain finish) add a premium on the material cost. Stain-grade hardwood doors price higher than paint-grade poplar or MDF. Request a free estimate for an accurate quote.

Why Handis for Cabinet Door Replacement

Most door-replacement-only projects we are asked to redo were ordered without a precision measurement. The doors arrived at the wrong overlay (the amount the door extends past the cabinet opening), or with the hinge boring at the wrong position, or with the wrong drawer-front clip pattern. The fix is a re-order at the homeowner's cost and a 3 to 6 week delay. The right answer is to measure every opening to the sixteenth before any order ships, ship measured shop drawings to the supplier, and accept the order only after a spot-check of the first three doors against the shop drawing. After enough door orders, every common measurement-error mode has a verification step in the process. We do not skip the measurement.

Measured to the sixteenth before the order ships

Every door and drawer opening in the kitchen measured to the sixteenth of an inch before any order leaves. Width, height, and the existing-door reveal. The reveal sets the overlay on the replacement door — the amount the door extends past the cabinet opening on each side. The measurements ship as a shop drawing to the door supplier; the supplier cuts every door and drawer face to spec; the kit arrives at our shop and every piece matches an opening. No re-measurement after delivery, no field-trim of replacement doors, no waiting for a re-order on a misfit door.

European concealed soft-close hinges, three-way adjustable

New hinges on every door — Blum BLUMOTION, Salice SilentSystem, or Grass Tiomos. Three-way adjustability for reveal alignment after install (height, depth, side-to-side) so the reveal on the top and bottom of every door is the same across the kitchen. Built-in soft-close damping. Quiet operation, no slam, doors stay in alignment for a decade.

Reveal adjustment until every door lines up

Every door reveal adjusted after install so the gap on the top of every door matches the gap on the bottom, and so the gap between adjacent doors lines up consistently across the run. The kitchen reads as a single coordinated set, not as a collection of misfit doors. We do the reveal adjustment as a final step, not as an option.

Drawer fronts attached with manufacturer clips, not improvised screws

New drawer fronts attach to the existing drawer boxes with the manufacturer-supplied drawer-front clip system — adjustable mechanical clips that allow precise centering and easy removal for future adjustment. Improvised screws from the back of the drawer box pull the drawer front off-center, do not allow micro-adjustment, and crack the drawer-front face from the inside under stress. We use the clip system on every drawer.

Free 30-day follow-up adjustment after hinges settle

New European hinges settle slightly under door weight in the first few weeks of use. The reveal that was perfect on install-day shifts by a hair after the hinge has carried the door's weight for a month. We offer a free 30-day follow-up adjustment visit where we re-tune every hinge so the reveal is perfect after the settle. Bundled in the quote.

Insured, background-checked, one-year project warranty

Handis carries general liability and workers' compensation; every technician has cleared a background screening before the first job. The one-year project warranty covers our scope — door hang, hinge adjustment, drawer-front attachment, reveal alignment. If a door reveal shifts out of square, a hinge soft-close fails, a drawer-front works loose, or any of our hang or adjustment work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no extra charge.

Estimate

Tell us the door and drawer-front count, the existing box style and finish (painted white shaker, stained oak, stained maple, stained cherry, painted color), the new door style and finish you have in mind (shaker, slab, raised-panel, beadboard; paint-grade or stain-grade; specific color or stain), and the pull pitch if you are doing pulls at the same time. We send a clear estimate with the measurement visit, the door order, and the hinge install named line by line.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Handis cabinet door and drawer-front replacement.

How much does a cabinet door replacement cost?
A partial kitchen of 10 to 15 doors starts at $2,500. A standard kitchen of 20 to 25 doors runs $4,000 to $5,000 depending on finish (paint-grade poplar is lower, stain-grade hardwood or thermofoil is higher). A large kitchen of 25 to 35 doors runs $6,000. A full kitchen of 30 to 50 doors and drawers runs $7,000. The estimate includes the measurement visit, the door and drawer-front order, the new soft-close hinges, the hang, the reveal adjustment, and the free 30-day follow-up adjustment. You get a written estimate before any work begins.
When does door replacement make sense versus full refacing?
Door replacement makes sense in three scenarios. First — painted boxes where the box paint matches what you want to keep, and you just want to change the door style. Second — stained boxes where you like the wood grain on the visible sides and want different doors. Third — any kitchen where the box-side finish is intact and matches what you want to keep, but the doors are dated, damaged, or just out of style. Full refacing (with new veneer skins on the boxes) is the right call when the box-side finish is dated and you want a full look-change. We help you choose on the booking call.
Can I keep the existing hinges or do I need new ones?
We strongly recommend new hinges on a door replacement. Old hinges (especially bare-metal slam-shut hinges from 1990s and 2000s kitchens) lose their alignment over time, do not have soft-close, and may not match the new door boring perfectly. New European concealed soft-close hinges (Blum BLUMOTION, Salice SilentSystem, or Grass Tiomos) give you soft-close on every door, three-way reveal adjustment, and a decade of consistent alignment. Hinge cost is a small fraction of the total replacement; the value-add is large.
How long does the project take?
The order-to-install timeline is typically 4 to 6 weeks total — 3 to 6 weeks lead time on the replacement doors (the supplier needs time to cut and finish every door and drawer face to spec), then 3 to 6 working days of install on site depending on door count. The install is fast because the box-side veneer work that adds days to a refacing is skipped. The 30-day follow-up adjustment visit happens after the hinges settle under door weight.
Will the new doors fit the existing cabinet boxes?
Yes — that is what the measurement-to-the-sixteenth step ensures. Every door and drawer opening measured before any order ships; the measurements ship as a shop drawing; the supplier cuts every door to spec. Replacement doors arrive perfect-fit. The hinge boring positions match the existing cabinet box hinge cup positions (the standard 35 mm Euro-style hinge cup is the industry standard and is on virtually every cabinet built since the mid-1990s). On rare older cabinets with non-standard hinge boring, we adapt with hinge-cup conversion or relocation.
Do I pick the door style and finish, or do you spec it?
You pick the style, finish, and color — the look is yours to own. We can recommend door style and supplier if you have not specified (Cabinet Door Shop, Conestoga, TaylorCraft on replacement doors; specific finish lines per supplier) and we can walk you through the trade-offs (paint-grade poplar is the workhorse for shaker; MDF is the cheapest for slab; stain-grade hardwood is the premium for any style; thermofoil is the budget option for a uniform colored finish). We talk through the options on the booking call.
Can I match the existing cabinet box paint color exactly?
Yes — we can tint the new doors to match the existing box paint exactly. Bring the box-paint brand and color code if you have it (Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, etc.); we ship the spec to the door supplier and they tint the door finish to match. If you do not have the original color code, we send a paint chip from the box to the paint counter for a custom-color match, then ship the matched code to the door supplier. The match is dead-on at conversational distance and very close at any viewing angle.
Will the drawer fronts match the new door style?
Yes. Replacement drawer fronts ship in the same style and finish as the doors in the same order — shaker doors and shaker drawer fronts, slab doors and slab drawer fronts, raised-panel doors and matching raised-panel drawer fronts. The drawer-front profile matches the door profile so the kitchen reads as a coordinated set.
Can I keep using the kitchen during the door replacement?
Yes — mostly. Day 1 is door removal (kitchen openings are exposed but functional). Days 2 to 4 are new-door hang and drawer-front attachment (sink and stove stay reachable). Days 5 and 6 are reveal adjustment and walkthrough. The kitchen does not go fully offline at any point on a door-replacement project the way it does on a full cabinet replacement. Plan to use the kitchen normally during the project.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes — one-year project warranty on our scope. If a door reveal shifts out of square, a hinge soft-close fails, a drawer-front works loose, or any of our hang or adjustment work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no extra charge. The free 30-day follow-up adjustment is included in the quote. Every Handis tech carries liability insurance and has cleared a background screening before the first job. Manufacturer defects on the doors or hinges themselves route to the brand for warranty.
